Grover Cleveland - Autograph Letter Signed outlet as President - re/ His Goodwill Tour

GROVER CLEVELAND. Autograph letter signed by Grover Clevelandas President to his Secretary of the Treasury Charles S. Fairchild. The letter measures smaller than octavo, wascreated in Washington, DC on September 21, 1887, is in fine condition with afew pencil markings and notations written by a previous owner, and isaccompanied with a steel engraving of Cleveland's birthplace. In addition, the letter has beenauthenticated by Charles Hamilton, the leading autograph dealer in the worldfrom the 1940s to the 1990s, and is accompanied with a description for theletter from Hamilton's catalog.

President Clevelandwants his Secretary of the Treasury to join him on his Goodwill Tour of 1887: “WashingtonSept. 21, 1887, Hon. Charles S. Fairchild, Stockbridge Mass., I am of theopinion that think you ought to be here.”.Cleveland became the first Democratic to win the presidency in 1884 sincethe Civil War and he planned to run for reelection in 1888. In order to promote his campaign andstrengthen the Democratic Party nationwide, he went on a Goodwill Tour throughthe Midwest and South of the United States that lasted from September 30, to October22, 1887. Cleveland's Goodwill Tourultimately failed when he lost the 1888 presidential election to IndianaGovernor Benjamin Harrison.
